The stage of consumption is changing.

People no longer visit department stores or supermarkets simply to buy things. They desire spaces where they can experience, relax, and enjoy culture. Online shopping, delivered to your doorstep with a single click, has become the norm. As a result, downtown department stores and hypermarkets, once symbols of the city for decades, are losing their former appeal and are closing one by one.

Abandoned space, but still a shining location

On the surface, they appear to be desolate, abandoned buildings, but they still occupy key locations in the heart of the city. They are a crossroads where people once walked, a junction where subways and buses converged, and a place where local residents shared memories. Therefore, these places are not mere ruins, but the starting point of a new story.

Record of Transformation

The NC Department Store at Beomgye Station in Pyeongchon was once the heart of the local commercial district, but it ultimately failed to withstand the passage of time. Now, however, a high-rise complex called Hillstate Beomgye Station Mobius has taken its place. It fills the void in office space, adds new color to Beomgye's food scene, and breathes new life into the area.

The same goes for the Hyundai Department Store in D Cube City, Sindorim. While the department store has left, its site is being redesigned as a mixed-use space combining retail and office space. It's transforming from a simple shopping mall into a space encompassing work, life, and culture.

And now, closed large supermarkets and department stores are also awaiting transformation. They could become logistics centers, commercial-residential complexes, or offices. What's important is that these sites are no longer "abandoned land," but rather stages that will embody the city of tomorrow.

Waiting for the future

I imagine the once-deserted space once filled with light and laughter. What was once a shopping hub will be reborn tomorrow as a new space that enriches people's lives.

Spaces reborn, embracing the city's memories. This process of change is the future of the city we face.
