TitleA series of incidents and accidents targeting real estate agents continue... On-site safety is no longer an option, but a necessity.2025-12-11 13:24
Recently, an incident occurred in Pyeongtaek where a real estate agent who was showing vacant properties was robbed.

The investigation revealed that while the real estate agent was inspecting the vacant home at the victim's request, the perpetrator suddenly tied his hands with a rope, threatened him with a weapon, and then snatched his credit card and fled. The meticulous nature of the crime, which included purchasing valuables with the victim's card and reselling them, further added to the shocking nature of the incident.

This incident highlights the reality that real estate agents often spend a lot of time alone, often working alone to show vacant properties, conduct late-night tours, and inspect properties in remote areas, making them vulnerable targets for criminals. Particular caution is required when a real estate agent attempts to arbitrarily specify a time and location, such as with phrases like "I want to see it right away" or "I need to move in urgently."

Safety blind spots don't just exist in the field. Accepting external requests without adequate customer verification procedures exposes brokers to the risk of exposure to unspecified individuals. Lack of a scheduling system, guidance without appointments, and practices that omit even basic identification are all identified as risk factors.

With each recurring incident, the brokerage industry has consistently called for the establishment of systematic safety protocols. Practical solutions include conducting initial meetings in the office whenever possible, mandating the verification of basic client information, and implementing an accompanying system for external guidance and emergency situation sharing features. Real-time location sharing with the office can also be an effective safety measure.

While bittersweet, creating a safe working environment for brokers is no longer optional, but essential. Strengthening industry-wide safety standards and improving systems are becoming imperative.
