“Is this ribs or chicken?” The original Nammun Chicken, which is famous for the ‘Suwon Wanggalbi Chicken’ from the movie <Extreme Jobs>, started out as a local restaurant “Nammun Chicken - Suwon Chicken Street Main Branch” in Suwon Chicken Street, the nationally famous chicken mecca, and as a food startup company born from solid roots, it is making rapid leaps forward in various fields every year.

Since 1795, the birth of Suwon Tongdak Street
It was 1795 (19th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), and King Jeongjo, the reformist monarch of Joseon, moved the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, to Suwon and built Suwon Hwaseong. Suwon was the first planned new city on the Korean Peninsula, and to foster the city, Jeongjo created a market in the fortress and gave benefits to merchants to attract businesses. This could be called Joseon’s version of Techno Valley. In addition, he distributed cows to citizens and had them raise them, which led to the creation of Joseon’s best cattle market, and Suwon Wanggalbi became Suwon’s representative specialty.

With the development of the cattle market, livestock product trading, selling pigs and chickens, became active, and various meat dishes made with them were sold. In this way, [Suwon Tongdak Street], which inherited its origins from the site of [Suwon Seongnae Market], which was established in 1795 (current location), was rebuilt in the 1970s through the Suwon City Traditional Market Restoration Project, and took on its current appearance. [Suwon Tongdak Street], which fries old-fashioned whole chickens on the spot in a cauldron, became a representative resting place for Suwon citizens as word of mouth spread. And Suwon Tongdak Street has now become a national tourist attraction visited by 1.4 million tourists every year.

However, as time went by, large marts and department stores began to appear all over Suwon City, and as a result, traditional markets declined, and the number of visitors to Suwon Fried Chicken Street also decreased.
