In Seoul, only Myeongdong and Euljiro are classified as &#039;central commercial districts&#039;, while most other areas are classified as &#039;general commercial districts&#039;.<br \/>Before the pandemic, Myeong-dong was the largest commercial district in Korea, bustling with domestic consumption as well as Chinese and Japanese tourists, but after the pandemic, it experienced a severe recession and the vacancy rate increased. There was a time when there were concerns that &#039;Myeong-dong is not the same as before,&#039; but recently, it has recovered quickly and is receiving attention again. <br \/>The vacancy rate of Myeongdong in 2023 was 14.5%, but it decreased significantly to 6.8% in the second quarter of 2024, and decreased to 4.4% in the fourth quarter of 2024, recovering to the pre-pandemic level. This change is due to the increase in tourists and the active entry of global brands. In particular, &#039;Myeongdong-gil&#039;, which is connected to Myeongdong Cathedral, and &#039;Myeongdong 8-gil&#039;, which is connected to Myeongdong Station on Subway Line 4, are the core streets Mountain, and Bukaksan Mountain hiking trails and trails, and traditional streets such as Bukchon Hanok Village and Jongno&#039;s Ikseon-dong, Insa-dong, and Seochon.<br \/>In addition, it is well-equipped with infrastructure for transportation, accommodation, and shopping, and is positioned as a center leading tourism consumption. <br \/>The Myeongdong area, consisting of Myeongdong 2-ga \/>Myeongdong is transforming from a simple shopping center to an international commercial center. Starting December 28, 2023, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety has designated Myeongdong as the &#039;2nd Outdoor Advertisement Free Zone&#039; and is promoting the &#039;Myeongdong Square Construction Project&#039;. <br \/>The project aims to transform Myeongdong into a global tourist attraction like New York&#039;s Times Square by installing large digital billboards and smart streetlights. <br \/>For this purpose, a budget of approximately 170 billion won will be invested, and the Myeongdong Media Cluster (MMC) will be established, and the world\u2019s largest display, smart streetlights, etc. will be installed in stages to create digital signage. According to this plan, small plazas appropriate for the name \u201csquare\u201d will be created at four locations: Euljiro 1-ga Station intersection, Myeongdong-gil, Lotte Department Store-Myeongdong-gil entrance, and around Shinsegae Department Store main branch.<br \/>The Myeongdong Square project will be carried out in three phases. The first phase (2024-2025) is divided into an introduction phase, which will involve building infrastructure and introducing ICT technology. The second phase (2026-2028) is the expansion phase, which will involve building a reinvestment base and local ecosystem.
